Our goal at National Brake & Muffler in Griffin is to provide you with the best transmission service possible. One way we do that is by helping you understand a little more about your transmission and the way it works. Knowledge about your vehicle and its systems allow you to catch problems when they arise and deal with them appropriately, saving you money and easing some of the stress of car ownership. You probably already know how to check your oil, and when to change it. Checking and maintaining transmission fluid is something people tend to understand far less about, however. Here’s what you need to know.

Most importantly, do what your owner’s manual says. If it calls for your transmission fluid or filter to be changed at a certain interval, it’s a good idea to do exactly that. There are a lot of conflicting opinions about changing transmission fluid on a vehicle that is far overdue for a change, or is starting to malfunction. The best way thing to do is to avoid being part of that conversation altogether by always properly maintaining your fluid.

If your transmission is slipping in and out of gear, shifting erratically, or has trouble engaging when you shift from park into reverse or drive, check the fluid level. Check out our previous article on how to check your transmission fluid level, if you aren’t familiar with the process. Don’t procrastinate on a fluid level check if your transmission is having issues...driving on low fluid can cause irreversible damage.

Some manufacturers boast transmissions that never need a fluid change. The truth is, it’s still a good idea to make sure the fluid is good. Bad fluid will be cloudy, dark colored, or smell burnt. However, diagnosing bad fluid can be a bit difficult if you aren’t familiar with its characteristics, and changing transmission fluid is a lot more complicated than changing your oil. If you think you need your fluid or filter replaced, it’s a good idea to leave it to a professional.

Our technicians at National Brake & Muffler are the experts you can count on for all your transmission questions and maintenance needs. If it’s time for a fluid or filter change, you think you might need a fluid change but aren’t sure, or have any other transmission related issues, let us know; we’re happy to help.
